Qualifying Event: Friday 10th July 2009
The Club was founded in 1903 and the course was opened for play in May 1904. The course was laid out by W. Herbert Fowler, a leading amateur golfer. It is a tribute to Fowler's genius that he created one of the finest examples of heathland golf, which so closely resembles the traditional seaside links courses, out of a jungle of heather, gorse and bracken. It is a further testament to his creativity that the Old Course with a championship length of 7,462 yards is currently ranked 81 in the top 100 courses in the world. The Old Course has hosted over 60 major amateur and professional championships in its illustrious history, including the 1981 Ryder Cup, 5 European Opens and 23 News of the World Matchplay Championships.
The Financial Times Business Championship visited Walton Heath this week for the 7th qualifier of the 2009 Championship.
The calm conditions made high scoring possible and the Old Course was in superb condition as always.
Last year's overall winners of the Championship, Wise and Co, took an early lead in the competition
